Identifying connectors: frequently asked questions
How do I tell DVI-D, DVI-I, and DVI-A apart?
Look at the long flat blade among the pins. DVI-I has four small pins surrounding the blade (analog) plus a block of digital pins. DVI-D has the digital pin block but no pins around the blade. DVI-A has only the blade with four pins around it and no digital block. See DVI-D vs DVI-I.
How can I tell HDMI from DisplayPort?
DisplayPort usually has a latch you press to release and an asymmetric shape (one squared corner, one beveled). HDMI has no latch or screws (friction-fit) and a gently tapered shape. See HDMI vs DisplayPort.
Which video connector is small and reversible?
USB-C — a small oval connector that plugs in either way up. It carries video only when the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt (look for the DisplayPort or Thunderbolt logo). See USB-C as a display cable.
